Interspersed with the concert footage, which was probably shot sometime in 1989, are enigmatic outdoor scenes, some of which involve a construction in the middle of a field, which is blown up at one point. On this tape Mylene amply demonstrates her singing and dancing skills as well as her penchant for drama and somewhat Gothic trappings, and it contains must-see performances of "Maman a Tort," "Deshabillez-Moi" and "Ainsi Soit Je...," among others. Performance at French TV5 There is a studio performance from the French TV network TV5 where she and a set of dancers, all wearing white tuxes, dance and lip-syncs to "Desenchantee". Advertisements The album "Dance Remixes" is advertised with a few seconds from many of her videos on the French-Canadian Music Video station MusiquePlus in April of 1993, during which time the video for "Que Mon Coeur Lāche" is played in rotation. Printed biography There apparently exits a printed French biography of hers called "Ainsi Soit-Elle". Probably only available in France and probably out of print. The following is a translation from Japanese of the liner notes found in the Japanese laserdisc edition of "The Videos". Translated 9/4/91 by Hiro Higashide (with great difficulties according to him). Mylene Farmer "The Videos" Laser Disc insert sheet translation "M. Farmer, a fairy, decorated by blood and violence" Current dominated main trends in Paris are, World music, "Yussou", "Sarif", "Mori Cante", they are all African artists. French artists are beaten by them. But France can't be beaten so easily. Even though France is not so big as America or Japan in size-wise, France has various size of music companies dealing with kinds of area from major to indies. In these circumstances, pure French music "Chanson" has introduced 2 big stars , "Revival of Edith Piaf" Patricia Kaas and "Fairy coming from Northern area" Mylene Farmer. Both artists made their debut in mid 80's. Now they are both young big stars in France. These two artists have totally different characteristics. Kaas insists on her voice power and talent straightly not much by paying attention to background sound and text contents. For example her promotional video was made just because everybody else made those. These video doesn't go beyond common sense. But in contrast, Farmer's one attract fans by its daring, fresh clip. How daring ? Please closely look this video. I can't remind any similar type of video so far. This video seems to request us to have some preparedness. Secondary, Farmer's song is not like classic vocal song which persuade audiences by singer's original voice sound and/or unique way of singing. Instead, by killing her individuality and by weakening female smell, she is creating sort of musical instrumental song. That is why her song is sometimes mis- understood like child song. But this not true. She is not like a "Lolita" singer which was popular in the past. In mid 80's, during record recession, French music industries were compelled to introduce "Rolicon" singers, such as "Elsa", "Vannessa Paradis", and "Corinne Tel". In early 50's, Film companies have made use of this way when introducing "Bridget Bardot" and "Mirene Domonjo". Anyway like this, for example, "Paradis" made her debut in film. At movie called <> (fake marriage) in '89, he played a role like "Bardot". Farmer seems to be a "Lolita" singer, in a sense of her childish face, skinny body, diminishing voice .... etc. But she is actually firm artist not childish singer. I happen to know this evidence when listening her second album which was actually debut album in Japan. In this album, she was singing old 60's chanson (Dezhabilez More). The texts in this song is that "Please take my clothes off !, But not so fast, Gradually, Take your time, Put fire on me, Come !, Come!....." In the end, her voice was getting more harsh then finally she shout "Dezhabilez More!!" This was given up voice to useless man. In the past parents were listening eroticism music after children went to bed. But Farmer(singer) and Boutonnat(arranger) changed this to humor interesting music. Without her sharp sensitivity and wisdom, this technique can not be occurred. Farmer is known as non-mass Media oriented person. So it is very seldom to accept interviews. That is why her private life is not revealed to the public. But I collected a couple information about her biography. She was born in Montreal, Canada when her father was working in Canada about 20+ years ago. Soon after born, her family went back to France. She was grown up in the French suburbs. She started to take a lesson of play soon after she graduate school at 17 years old. But she was not satisfied by play class itself. At that time, she met with Laurent Boutonnat who was dreaming about creation of high level musical visual art. Farmer and Boutonnat hit it off. After this, Boutonnat became a indispensable partner of Farmer as composer, and also keyboard player. First single album (Crazy Mama) was released in '84. This album was so well accepted as a new talent. Second single album (always foolish) was also succeeded. In '85, more than 200,000 first album (Moon's ash) were sold. Since then, the video clip produced by Boutonnat and Farmer was getting more popular. Farmer became known rapidly from this point. More than 1 million of second album ,which was released in '88, was sold. This album became a "Diamond Disc". In France, relatively small record market, this record was surprising number. Probably less than once in 10 years history. She was also selected as a youngest wonderful female singer in '88. In '89, more than 75,000 audiences went to Farmer's concert tour in Paris (only). Almost all people who saw her clip was extremely impressed about its fictional drama. First piece will bring viewer to the n-th dimensional space where is much different from ordinary world. Desolated scene with "Sepia- Tone", Men wearing strange makeup, they look like maybe Gypsy or traveling actors . Anyway they are not like same people as we are. Marionette who was almost dying met them and came back to life. And was grown to a lady who knew loves. But this process does not give us bright image, instead, gives us some sort of paganism. ??????????? This story was painted by middle ages' gothic roman. Song is further more paganism and has a black attraction. Snake creeping on the leaves, Christian doll thrown away, Swearing man & woman, ... these introductions will imagine us un-ordinary anxiety. Heroin stabbed a Gypsy accidentally during playing with him. Exotic girl's sudden flash of a evil spirit. This clip should be viewed keeping following text in your mind. "No Reason / I am away from myself / Even be a evil of spirit / or even be an angel / ..... I may tear your eyes with a knife" This text is really poisonous just reverse of actual light rhythm sound we hear. Hidden poison veiled by lovely outlook distinguish Farmer's song from "Rolicon" singer who may not have intelligences. Over 17 minute' song is really a film movie. Of course a great number of extra-actors, loud fighting scene, a lot of money devoted to this film , ... are wonderful. In addition to this, soldier and prostitute's sexual scene, and strong fighting scene between spy and Farmer are most impressive. Overall, blood scene, sadism, and violence. Farmer and Boutonnat combination's work is far beyond music promotion video and became a Hollywood spectacle. Next piece is totally different from former pieces. Farmer's hyper-sex scene is expressed. Mono-color screen's transparency and romantic chanson melody are beautiful. Last 2 pieces from Live concert. Neither of these do not expose Farmer's real figure. In a piece , projected flame of cemetery is veiling her song by anti-realism. Her concert is not expressing her voice like other singer does. Clip's image is expanded in a fantasy. Last one shows spectacular fire works' stage setting. Dancing in this scene is Farmer's original one. You may see similarity with Michael Jackson or Janet. But look at her and dancers costume. Only Black & White like nun or dormitory's uniform. Like this, she is always veil or rejecting real body. Outlook is a exact young idol. But she is playing singer in a fantasy world far beyond commercialism. This is a Farmer !
